Island Health Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of residents of Tower Hamlets and Newham. Founded in 1992 we have over the last 26 years worked closely with numerous social enterprises, local organisations, businesses and community groups, to enhance health and wellbeing in the community.
The link between wellbeing and work has been well documented and there is a strong relationship between social inequality and health. The World Health Organisation Determinants of Health clearly identifies employment, financial, and social status as key factors in determining the health of any community. Tower Hamlets and Newham are both boroughs with significant levels of unemployment, as well as being home to Canary Wharf and the growing populations of better-off property owners moving into the area as a result of significant residential development.
With the aim of improving health across the two Boroughs the primary focus at Island Health Trust has been the creation of training and employment opportunities as a means of enabling the most vulnerable residents to improve their health and thus their life chances. As a local charity, we are dedicated to providing the financial help that can deliver more and better employment opportunities that make a positive impact on the health of the most disadvantaged residents and their families.
